The nation's capital has many coffee shops to offer anyone looking for the independent coffeehouse atmosphere, and, of course, a great cup of coffee.

Washington DC, like many U.S. cities, is filled to the brim with Starbucks. In some neighborhoods, such as Dupont Circle, there are seven locations, all within a five minute walking distance from each other. As prolific as the coffee mega-giant may be, there are a number of alternatives that are well worth visiting. Whether a local, or a visitor, check out what the District's coffeehouse culture has to offer.

Kramerbooks and Afterwords Cafe

Opened in 1976, Kramer's is one of the nation's first coffeehouses to offer a full bar, cafe menu, and an adjoined bookstore in addition to espresso and coffee beverages. The cafe keeps its doors open late seven days a week, making it a great location to meet friends for a midnight cup of coffee. Kramer's is located at 1517 Connecticut Avenue, in the Dupont Circle neighborhood.

Soho Coffee and Tea

Another late night coffeehouse in Dupont Circle, Soho is located on the corner of P Street, and 22nd, at 2150 P Street NW. This is a classic, trendy New York style coffeehouse. The furniture is mismatched and worn, local artwork is displayed on the walls, the staff members are as laid back and eclectic as the store.

Soho's house blend is a rich blend of Brazilian and Sumatran beans. They also offer a variety of loose leaf teas, pastries, desserts, sandwiches, and eggs. This is the coffeehouse of choice for locals who want to work on their laptops and sip a latte for hours.

The Mocha Hut

The Mocha Hut is a neighborhood coffeehouse, serving up a cozy, inviting atmosphere with a good cup of coffee. Opened in 2000, the Mocha Hut is located in the U Street area, at 1301 U Street NW. This is the coffeehouse where you can order a Cuban (espresso with raw sugar) and pecan waffles, and then make yourself comfortable to enjoy performances by some of DC's most talented underground poetry and hip hop artists at the Thursday night open mic.

Modern Times Coffeehouse

Modern Times is connected to the popular local bookstore, Politics and Prose, located at 5015 Connecticut Avenue. It has a quaint, artsy atmosphere, which is perfect for students or anyone who enjoys reading a good book with a cup of incredible coffee. They also have free wireless internet available. The coffeehouse is adorned with local art and furnished with variety wooden tables and chairs.

Modern Times focuses on the quality of their brewed product, serving only fair trade and organic beans. Their emphasis on barista training comes through in their well-made espresso beverages. Modern Times also serves pastries and desserts.

Whatever your preference, or location, there are plenty of options for coffee lovers in Washington D.C. to have a true coffeehouse experience.
