When the weather turns chilly, a warm cocktail is the perfect choice for holiday parties or quiet evenings at home.

Coffee is one of the most popular hot drinks in the world, so it's no wonder that coffee based cocktails come so quickly to mind when searching for the perfect warm drink. As an added bonus, they're also quick and easy, and many can be adapted as non-alcoholic treats as well.

Almond Coffee Cream

  • 3/4 cup hot coffee
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream, scalded
  • 1 shot amaretto

Combine all ingredients in a warm mug and serve. For added flavor, garnish with a cinnamon stick for stirring. This drink can easily be made non-alcoholic by substituting almond extract for the amaretto; about a teaspoon should be plenty, but adjust the amount according to taste.

Nose Warmer

  • 1/4 oz. Tia Maria
  • 1/4 oz. Frangelica
  • 1/4 oz. Bailey's Irish Cream
  • 1/4 oz. Grand Marnier
  • 1 cup hot coffee

Combine all ingredients in a warm mug and serve. Top with whipped cream for garnish.

Cajun Coffee

  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • 1/2 - 1 tbs. molasses
  • 1/2 - 1 tbs. dark rum

Combine the coffee and molasses to a warm mug and stir until the molasses is dissolved. Add rum, and serve garnished with whipped cream. Substitute rum extract for the dark rum, and you have a delicious alcohol free version.

For a real Cajun taste, use a chicory-blend coffee, such as those available from Community Coffee, Cafe Du Monde or French Market Coffee. Be prepared - chicory adds a distinctive and bitter flavor!

Capetown Coffee

  • 1 1/2 oz. bourbon or Canadian whiskey
  • 1 tbsp. coconut cream
  • 1 cup hot coffee

In a warmed mug, combine hot coffee and coconut cream and stir until cream is dissolved. Add whiskey and serve. Serve garnished with a dollop of whipped cream.

Cafe Napoleon

This coffee treat may seem more complicated because of the number of ingredients, but it's actually simple to mix, and it makes a beautiful presentation. Makes 4 servings.

  • 8 whole cloves
  • 4 cups strong, black coffee
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 oz. B&B liqueur
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 1 oz. cognac or brandy
  • 1 oz. gold rum
  • 1 oz. kummel
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • grated nutmeg
  • orange zest (peel of 1/2 orange)
  • whipped cream

Put all ingredients except the spirits, whipped cream and nutmeg, into the flaming pan of a chafing dish over direct heat and bring to a simmer, but do not boil. Add B&B, kummel, and rum, and stir well. Warm the cognac in a ladle over hot water, ignite, and pour blazing into the chafing dish. Stir and serve in large cups of mugs, top with whipped cream and sprinkle with nutmeg.

This cocktail can easily be done without the flaming presentation. Simply add the cognac in with the other spirits.

And of course, don't forget such classics as Kentucky Coffee and the traditional Irish Coffee.
