With this flavored coffee drink recipe as good as the coffee franchise, enjoy the autumn flavor of homemade pumpkin pie and the warmth of gormet coffee, all in one mug.

Back in 2004, the coffee franchise Starbucks hit on a flavored coffee drink everyone goes wild over during the autumn and winter months. In fact, their sales for that October actually increased %11 from the previous year due primarily to the new Pumpkin Spice Latte.

While a trendy coffee house ambiance is great, sometimes it’s fun to relax at home with a steaming latte on a chilly autumn day. Latte lovers can enjoy a similar spicy pumpkin drink at a fraction of the cost with this recipe. All the home barista needs is a coffee maker or French press, a blender, a stove top or steamer, and some readily available ingredients.

Why not serve this steaming gormet coffee beverage to family and friends gathered to celebrate the festive season.

Flavored Coffee Drink Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons canned pumpkin
  • 1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • Vanilla-flavored coffee creamer (to taste)
  • ½ cup strong coffee or 1-2 shots espresso (1/4 cup)
  • Whipped cream

Instructions for Making the Flavored Coffee Drink

  1. Heat the puréed pumpkin and milk In a saucepan until the mixture is steaming.
  2. Be careful not to let the mixture boil.
  3. Stir in the vanilla and cinnamon.
  4. When the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, pour them into a blender for a few seconds. The blender can be skipped in a rush, but definitely makes for a thick and foamy latte.
  5. Pour the beverage into a tall glass, then add the coffee or espresso. Top the seasonal drink off with whipped cream and a dash of nutmeg.

Ingredients in Pumpkin Pie Spice

Pumpkin pie spice is a blend of cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg. When combined in the right proportions, it produces the flavor everyone associates with wonderful, homemade pumpkin pies. The spice blend is sold premixed in the spice isle of the grocery store. Another creative option is to purchase a can of pre-spiced pumpkin purée such as Libby’s Pumpkin Pie Filling, that already has the spices mixed in.

Baristas who’d like to make their own blend can combine the spices in the following proportions.

  • 4 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon ground cloves or allspice
  • 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg

There’s no better drink for the autumn and winter season than this latte. Pumpkin pie lattes are perfect for sipping with a good book by the fireside. And, hosts who offer the festive beverage with dessert during a Thanksgiving or Christmas party are sure to get rave reviews. Baristas should be sure add Pumpkin Pie Latte and Normandy Coffee, another great holiday flavored coffee beverage, to their repertoire before the year's festivities come to a close.
